The Honestly, Though Guide to Cycle Studios in Washington, D.C.

Like many a recent grad, I was terribly out of shape when I left college. Late-nights studying, fried foods and endless Red Bulls resulting in me feeling and looking worse than ever. Though I'd always been a runner, I hadn't in months. I felt completely discouraged about wearing tight tops or walking into the gym.

Enter: Cycling.

I'd taken classes religiously at a local Gold's Gym  my senior year of high school, but had never heard of studios dedicated entirely to spin class.

I forget how I found out about Zengo Cycle, but it was the first time I'd been to a spin class in years. I remember feeling completely out of place and choosing a seat that was basically at the back of the class next to the door. I remember that Kelsey was teaching my first class at Zengo Cycle. The music was blasting and we went through a three minute routine of pulsing our arms on the handlebars — and at the end of three minutes I thought I would die.

But at the end of class? I was dripping in sweat, filled with accomplishment and terrified to return.

But I did. Over and over and over again.

Years later, I've tried to visit studios everywhere I've traveled and I take class multiple times a week. If I'm feeling crazy, I take classes back to back.

So here I am, writing a little guide to all of the DC studios I've visited. There's ones that combine pilates with spinning. and some that treat you to coffee and cookies afterwards. Peruse through, and I'll see you on the bikes!

ZENGO CYCLE

By far my favorite spin studio — though I'm definitely biased. Like I said above....after college, I was in terrible shape and fell in love with spinning at Zengo Cycle's Mosaic location. Their class is rhythm-based and includes push-ups on the bike, sprints, jumps, a weights section and epic climbs. They have locations throughout the DMV, though only one in DC proper at the moment (Logan Circle). Spin shoes are required to ride.

____________

SOULCYCLE

The "original" spin studio — and the one that took the country by storm. This cult favorite is another rhythm-based cycling studio with a 5-minute weights section. Regulars are easily spotted clad in head-to-toe SOUL swag. All of the instructors are incredibly active on social media, and many regularly write for the SoulCycle blog. They have studios throughout Washington, D.C., and require spin shoes (you can rent them).
